The Santa Rosa Blue Hole
Along Route 66 in New Mexico is a natural wonder you need to stop off and see. The Santa Rosa Blue Hole is a natural lake and is an oasis in the desert. I didn't even know it was there until we took a road trip to Arizona to visit my folks. My DH said he always wanted to see it, so we took a detour.
After driving into Santa Rosa (which honestly looks similar to every other struggling small town in the southwest), we missed the turn for the Blue Hole and drove around a bit (my fault, he did tell me to turn.) Finally we found the way and we were rewarded. To save you the trouble we had, Istole borrowed a map off of the Blue Hole website to help you, so be sure to scroll to the bottom!
The water is a gorgeous constant 62 degrees year round, which is wonderful to experience on a hot day in the desert. The water is crystal clear and visibility is reported to be 100'. The hole itself extends 82' deep, but it is connected by underground aquifers to 6 other similar lakes. These connecting tunnels have been explored and are no longer accessible to the many scuba divers who come every year to practice their skills. If you want to get certified to scuba dive, they have a dive shop where I am sure someone could point you to an instructor.
The water remains so clear and beautiful because renews itself every 6 hours. The water flows at 3000 gallons per hour and is filtered through the deep rock which produces the crystal clear water. Because it is so clear visibility is 100 feet! The hole has a surface diameter of 80 feet across and straight down is 82 deep. You don't need to be a scuba diver to enjoy the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole can be your favorite new swimming hole.
So how do you get there? Well, feel free to use the map above to find your way! It is conveniently located right off I40 between Amarillo and Albuquerque. Take exit 275 and look for the signs or you can use your GPS. The address is 1085 Blue Hole Road, Santa Rosa, NM 88435.
